- 1849-1895. British Conservative politician,
- chancellor of the Exchequer and leader of the
- House of Commons 1886; father of Winston
- Churchill. Born at Blenheim Palace, son of
- the 7th duke of Marlborough, he entered
- Parliament 1874. In 1880 he formed a
- Conservative group known as the Fourth Party
- with Drummond Wolff (1830-1908), J E Gorst,
- and Arthur Balfour, and in 1885 his policy of
- Tory democracy was widely accepted by the
- party. In 1886 he became chancellor of the
- Exchequer, but resigned within six months
- because he did not agree with the demands
- made on the Treasury by the War Office and
- the Admiralty. In 1874 he married Jennie
- Jerome (1854-1921), daughter of a wealthy New
