  1. 1849-1895. British Conservative politician,
  2. chancellor of the Exchequer and leader of the
  3. House of Commons 1886; father of Winston
  4. Churchill. Born at Blenheim Palace, son of
  5. the 7th duke of Marlborough, he entered
  6. Parliament 1874. In 1880 he formed a
  7. Conservative group known as the Fourth Party
  8. with Drummond Wolff (1830-1908), J E Gorst,
  9. and Arthur Balfour, and in 1885 his policy of
  10. Tory democracy was widely accepted by the
  11. party. In 1886 he became chancellor of the
  12. Exchequer, but resigned within six months
  13. because he did not agree with the demands
  14. made on the Treasury by the War Office and
  15. the Admiralty. In 1874 he married Jennie
  16. Jerome (1854-1921), daughter of a wealthy New
  17. Yorker. He married Jennie Jerome (1854-1921),
